Richard Stewart was elected to the GRCC Board of trustees in May 2011. A musician by training, Dr. Stewart holds a B. Mus. in organ performance from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, an SMM in organ and choral music from Union Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in music composition from Michigan State University.
Upon moving to Grand Rapids in 1972, he began a thirty-three year full-time career in private higher education as a faculty member at Cornerstone University, serving concurrently for twenty-four years as chairman of the school’s Division of Fine Arts. His activities in choral music have included the founding and directing of the Evangelical Choral Society, and six concert tours abroad of the Cornerstone University Chorale. As a composer he has produced works for several of America’s leading solo performers, as well as large-scale works for chorus and orchestra which have received nominations for major international awards.
Dr. Stewart’s heart is in undergraduate teaching and learning, and hopes his service on the Board will help enable GRCC’s students to achieve their fullest potential academically and personally.
