Our campus promotes a welcoming culture nurtured by dialogue and grounded in mutual respect. We believe maintaining an environment that respects individuals' needs and abilities is vital for our community's well-being.
In an effort to monitor and uphold these values, we conducted a survey to evaluate "campus climate," which is defined as "the current attitudes, behaviors, and standards of faculty, staff, administrators, and students concerning the level of respect for individual needs, abilities and potential."
Our Campus Climate Team contracted with Rankin and Associates Consulting to conduct this survey and store the results on a third-party server to ensure participant confidentiality. The survey was provided online and on paper, with assistance available through Disability Support Services.
Our survey was intended to:
- Foster a caring community that provides leadership for constructive participation in a diverse, multicultural world.
- Open the doors wider for underserved members of the community with the goal of creating an inclusive environment.
- Improve the working and learning environment at GRCC.
The results indicate that 84 percent of respondents – including faculty, staff/administrators and students – are “comfortable” or “very comfortable” with the GRCC campus climate. Conversely, the results also indicate that 11 percent of respondents believe they have personally experienced exclusionary, intimidating, offensive, and/or hostile conduct.
Sue Rankin, of Rankin & Associates Consulting, said the results are consistent with their findings at other higher education institutions across the country.
There were 3, 289 GRCC community members who completed the survey — a response rate of 19 percent. Reviewing the response rate by constituent group, of the total population in each group, 17 percent of students, 26 percent of faculty, and 48 percent of staff/administrators — or 2,771 students, 204 faculty, and 314 staff/administrators — completed the survey.
